McLeran, retired dean of the University of Iowa's College of Dentistry, died Thursday in Arizona.

Dr. McLeran, 69, of Coralville, suffered a heart attack at Del E. Webb Memorial Hospital in Phoenix. "Dr. McLeran offered outstanding leadership to the University of Iowa dental school, as well as to the field of dental education," said John Montgomery, an associate dean at the school for nearly 25 years.

"He was a remarkable individual and a good friend." A graduate of Simpson College in Indianola, Dr. McLeran graduated from the University of Iowa College of Dentistry in 1957. He served in the U.S. Navy for two years and returned as a of I faculty member in the department of oral surgery. In 1957, he received the first Outstanding Instructor of the Year award ever given in the College of Dentistry.

Dr. McLeran played a major role in the planning and construction of the Dental Science Building, which opened in 1974. One year later, he became the dean of the college. Friends said Dr. McLeran encouraged students to see the role of health care in terms of human interaction.

"Putting the patient first" became a widely recognized and respected hallmark of his administration. Dr. McLeran, former president of the American Association of Dental Schools, retired in 1997 and since has served as dean emeritus. Survivors include his wife, Hermine; three sons, Steve of North Liberty, John of Blairstown and Chuck of Iowa City; two brothers; one sister; and three grandchildren. la. Clutching a handheld joystick, students glide past brown brick homes, red barns, rows of crops. They move across patchworktype fields for a face-to-face encounter with a supercell thunderstorm, one powerful enough to produce a significant tornado. The mezzo cyclone rotates as the twister spins dirt and debris across a field. While not yet reality, this is something meteorology students at Iowa State University could experience.

It's part of a simulated tornado and thunderstorm computer program under design for a virtual reality lab at the university. Professors hope it trains meteorologists to more effectively spot tornado storms. The $25,000 project is one way to give meteorology students a better grasp of classroom knowledge, says ISU's Bill Gallus, assistant professor of geological and atmospheric science. The project is funded by an Iowa State Miller Faculty Development Fund. Earlier this month, Gallus took a group of meteorology students storm spotting in Buchanan and Black Hawk counties, where up to 12 tornadoes touched down, but he says not a all students can do that.

"One reason for the project was to take a complex thing that's explained the old-fashioned way in a textbook," Gallus said. "People would have to picture that in 3-D." The virtual program eventually will be shown in the university's new 06 virtual reality lab in Howe Hall. The $6 million six-sided cave is expected to open June 19. A five-member team worked on the project for the past year. The initial product will be finished in June, when the funding runs out.

After that, Gallus hopes it will attract support from outside the university. 4 DON BENNETT Coos Bay, Ore. Don R. Bennett, 66, of Coos Bay, died of a heart attack May 20 in San Bernardino, Calif. The body was cremated, and private memorial services will be held at a Mr.
