Team From 3A diets for overweight house pets. Last year, four eighth-graders, known as the "Environmental Warriors," won second place in the national competition for a project on the need to recycle used oil filters and the residual oil trapped in the filter. The project earned the Governor's Iowa Environmental Excellence Award in Waste Management in February. Next week, the team, Josh Armbruster, Emily Ciha and Lyle Gardner, in addition to Northwest Junior High student Derek Ibarra, will join other students in Washington to receive a President's Environmental Youth Award from the Environmental Protection Agency. "Every school has all these kinds of kids," said Ibarra, a West Branch teacher of nearly 24 years.

"It's like any winning program. Everyone knows when they have a winning program, more kids want to get involved. They realize there are benefits, not only the learning aspect, but in being part of a team, getting along with other kids and learning new things about other kids." The young women of "Get the Lead Out" became good friends during the three-month period that they researched lead in paint in their town of 2,188 people. Using lead kits, they tested 16 buildings including churches, houses and a business, in addition to making brochures and writing letters, said Becca, 12. The girls said they will spend the next month preparing their presentation and refining their project.

"We're trying to get to first place, but we're also trying to fix something that's been happening," Sarah said. "They gave it to us to use for really cheap," Dye said. "It has panels on it, so you can bolt it. You don't have to weld." Moving the robot takes two controllers. Platter said he uses a dual drive, maneuvering two sticks similar to a tank's controls to move the robot around. Dye sits aside with a Super Nintendo control pad to move the robot's arms.

"It's meant to be in your hands," Dye said. The team has been working on the project. since early January, putting in long nights and weekends to finish their design and build the robot. We also did a lot of pheasant hunting and fishing." After Morgan's first year of college at UI, his father, who was a painter for the university, died in a scaffolding accident. "His whole life changed after that," Ross said. "When that happened, he went to work part time for an electrician. He wanted to take care of his mother and two brothers. He was always very protective of them." Morgan served as treasurer of the Coralville Independent School District and worked at First National Bank as a teller for 17 years.

Later, he worked for the UI athletic business office. He retired from the UI business office in 1986. He also was a World War II veteran, having served in the Pacific aboard the U.S.S. Sebec. After the war, Ross moved away from Coralville, but the two corresponded throughout their lives.

Ross visited Morgan at the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown a few years ago. "He was very well spoken and talked and laughed a lot," Ross said. "He always had a good time. But I don't think he ever drank or smoked in his life."
