How to calculate how much gravel is needed? ›

Length in feet x Width in feet x Depth in feet (inches divided by 12). Take the total and divide by 21.6 (the amount of cubic feet in a ton). The final figure will be the estimated amount of tons required.

Using 2 inches for the depth, the following measurements are a guide to the amount of gravel coverage per ton: 1/4 to 1/2 inch gravel, 100 square feet per ton; 1/2 to 1 inch gravel, 90 square feet per ton; and 1 1/2 to 2 inches gravel, 80 square feet per ton.

How do I calculate how much gravel I need? Take a look at the area that you require graveling. If measuring in meters, multiply the width by the length and then multiply this by the depth and you will end up with the amount of cubic meters required.

What depth of gravel do I need? You would usually lay a 10mm aggregate at a depth of 30-40mm, but on a driveway this would need to be at least 50mm. A 20mm aggregate would need to be at least 40-50mm deep, and at least 50-60mm on driveways. A larger aggregate will settle and bond together better than smaller ones.

Opt for gravel that is 1/4 inch or smaller in diameter for the most comfortable walking surface. You'll want to choose gravel that has a smooth texture, too, because rounded edges are less likely than sharp ones to hurt underfoot. Gravel can be used for driveway creation purposes regardless of size.

A cubic yard is a measurement that is 3 feet by 3 feet by 3 feet and measures volume, where as a ton, measures weight. To put this in perspective, a yard of topsoil usually weighs about 1,800 pounds and a yard of gravel usually weighs about 2,200 pounds.

Typically, larger dump trucks can carry about 28,000 pounds or about 14 tons. On average, smaller dump trucks can transport around 13,000 to 15,000 pounds or 6.5 to 7.5 tons.

A small pickup truck (i.e. Ranger, S-10) can hold 1 cubic yard of mulch, a ½ cubic yard of topsoil, or a ½ yard of sand or gravel. A full size pickup truck (i.e. F250, 3/4 - 1 ton pickup) with a full size bed can hold 2-3 cubic yards of mulch, 1-2 cubic yards of topsoil or 1 yard of sand or gravel.

A ton of gravel will cover approximately 100 square feet, 2 inches deep.

How many yards is 1 ton of gravel? ›

To find the volume needed, determine the amount of area to be covered by gravel as well as the desired depth of the gravel. The ideal depth of gravel varies depending on the application, but a minimum of 2-4 inches of gravel is a workable baseline.

The ideal gravel size is around ¼”-1” and selecting gravel that is not too large and flat, or too large and roundish will ensure you better results and less issues and a better surface. Most commonly used is 57 Granite, Crusher run, Small pea gravel and even Alabama Path Stone.

If you prefer to or have to calculate cubic footage by hand, you can find cubic feet by multiplying three linear measurements—length, width, and height—in feet. For instance, to find the volume of a cube, you would calculate the following: length x width x height.
